The capital has welcomed a stunning new wildlife experience. Butterfly Gardens Abu Dhabi, located next to The National Aquarium at Al Qana, is now open, and it promises to enchant all visitors.
Step inside and you’ll find yourself in a fully immersive, nature-driven experience. Within the climate-controlled biodomes inspired by the landscapes of Asia and the Americas, over 10,000 butterflies drift through lush tropical landscapes. Wander along through planted pathways past koi ponds and experience these delicate creatures up close as they flutter freely around you, creating a magical escape into nature at the heart of the city.
While butterflies remain the headline act, the gardens push beyond the traditional exhibit format. Deeper inside, visitors can spot a rare mix of wildlife, including the two-toed sloth, Palawan bearcat, Cuvier’s dwarf caiman, tamandua, Sri Lankan giant squirrel and Gouldian finches. With species moving freely through the space, the experience is intended to feel open and natural, allowing guests to observe behaviour up close without the sense of a typical display.
Sustainability also plays a central role. The butterflies are ethically sourced through long-standing partnerships with small-scale farming communities in Costa Rica and the Philippines, supporting conservation-focused breeding and sustainable livelihoods. A percentage of butterflies is released back into the wild each month to support pollination and strengthen the surrounding ecosystem.
The new attraction will promote education, and school groups can join sessions on ecosystems, pollination and biodiversity, while interactive areas introduce visitors to insects and tropical species. Guided tours will be available for families, private groups and tourists. With a cafe, boutique and event spaces for workshops, visitors can also opt for a combined ticket with The National Aquarium next door.
