Muslims and non-Muslims are entitled to work Ramadan hours.

Ramadan in the UAE is a time of reflection and community spirit, which means spirituality takes precedence over everything else. As the Holy Month approaches, the UAE has announced reduced working hours for Ramadan, allowing everyone to balance their professional responsibilities with their spiritual commitments.

The Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) has confirmed that federal government employees will have adjusted working hours during Ramadan. Employees in the UAE typically work eight to nine hours per day. During Ramadan, working hours are reduced by two hours daily. Any time worked outside these reduced hours may be treated as overtime, which may entitle employees to additional compensation.

Public sector working hours have also been reduced. From Monday to Thursday, employees will work from 9am to 2.30pm, while on Fridays, working hours will be 9am to 12pm, except for roles where operational requirements dictate otherwise. Those in Sharjah will work Monday to Thursday only, with a three-day weekend. The shorter schedule gives residents more time to spend with family and friends, and for prayer and reflection. Flexible working arrangements or remote work, where applicable, are also encouraged.

Ramadan is a spiritual time when Muslims fast from dawn to dusk for 29 or 30 days, depending on the lunar calendar. However, the fast extends beyond just abstaining from food and drink. It’s about self-discipline, gratitude, and compassion.

Public etiquette during Ramadan encourages respect for those who are fasting. While eating and drinking in public during fasting hours should be avoided, restaurants remain open throughout the day to cater to non-fasting individuals, ensuring an inclusive environment for all.

This year, Ramadan is expected to begin on Thursday, 19 February 2026. However, a confirmed date will be announced once a moon sighting is confirmed.

Whether observing the fast or simply soaking in the cultural experience, Ramadan is a time to connect, reflect, and celebrate unity. So gear up for the Holy Month and embrace the blessings that come with it. Ramadan Kareem!
